Digital tools are increasingly present in education not only to enhance teaching but also to assist educators with lesson planning and students’ assessment. This undergraduate dissertation defends the use of corpus linguistics tools by language teachers to carry out their work more efficiently. In fact, the dissertation’s main objective is to test one of these applications called Text Inspector to find out if English teachers could use it to evaluate the accuracy of students' writings. To this end, corpora compiled from undergraduate dissertation abstracts of students in Engineering, Business Administration and Early Childhood Teaching at University of Valladolid (Uva) have been introduced in the software, which automatically determines the Common European Framework of Reference for languages (CEFR) level of each group. Then, some metrics have been applied to the data to scientifically validate the reliability of the tool, finding some limitations.

Increasingly, the literature highlights the importance of implementing and developing socially responsible behaviours by all stakeholders in the tourism sector. This paper describes the evolution of research on social responsibility in the tourism sector until July 2020. We compiled a database of 846 articles focused on the field and published in academic journals in the ISIWoS database. Bibliometric methods and techniques were used to describe the evolution of scientific activity, countries and active institutions, most productive authors, most relevant sources, most influential documents, trend topics, and social structure researched. This determined the state of the art and described the evolution of the literature in this field, and will help scholars refine existing and initiate new research agendas. A total of 846 papers were identified and the results showed an upward trend in scientific production relating corporate social responsibility (CSR) to tourism. Based on these analyses, possible forms of future research are proposed to advance towards the consolidation of this scientific discipline

Lipid Oxidation Inhibition in Frozen Farmed Salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch ): Effect of Packaging

3 pages, 1 table.Coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) has recently attracted a great interest as a farmed product. This research focuses on its commercialisation as a frozen product. For it, an advanced storage technology combining vacuum and a polyphenolic rich-film was applied for a 9-months storage period (–18°C). The study was addressed to lipid hydrolysis and oxidation changes and to endogenous antioxidant content in salmon muscle. No effect of packaging conditions could be observed on free fatty acid formation. However, vacuum packaging conditions provided a partial inhibition of primary (peroxide) and secondary (anisidine value) lipid oxidation development; this inhibitory effect was accompanied by a lower tocopherol isomers loss. The employment of a film including polyphenolic compounds led to a partial inhibition of α-tocopherol breakdown and to a lower secondary (anisidine value) and tertiary (fluorescent compound formation) lipid oxidation development. A partial inhibitory effect on lipid oxidation development is concluded for the employment of a polyphenolic compound rich-film packaging when applied to farmed coho salmon. This research was carried out in the frame of the Project No. 2006 CL 0034 (2007–2008), granted by the U. Chile-CSIC Cooperation Program. Coho salmon fish was provided by Aquachile SA (Puerto Montt, Chile).Peer reviewe

The chromatin remodeller CHD8 is required for E2F-dependent transcription activation of S-phase genes

The precise regulation of S-phase-specific genes is critical for cell proliferation. How the repressive chromatin configuration mediated by the retinoblastoma protein and repressor E2F factors changes at the G1/S transition to allow transcription activation is unclear. Here we show ChIP-on-chip studies that reveal that the chromatin remodeller CHD8 binds ∼2000 transcriptionally active promoters. The spectrum of CHD8 target genes was enriched in E2F-dependent genes. We found that CHD8 binds E2F-dependent promoters at the G1/S transition but not in quiescent cells. Consistently, CHD8 was required for G1/S-specific expression of these genes and for cell cycle re-entry on serum stimulation of quiescent cells. We also show that CHD8 interacts with E2F1 and, importantly, loading of E2F1 and E2F3, but not E2F4, onto S-specific promoters, requires CHD8. However, CHD8 recruiting is independent of these factors. Recruiting of MLL histone methyltransferase complexes to S-specific promoters was also severely impaired in the absence of CHD8. Furthermore, depletion of CHD8 abolished E2F1 overexpression-dependent S-phase stimulation of serum-starved cells, highlighting the essential role of CHD8 in E2F-dependent transcription activation

[EN] The aim of this study was to verify the effect of cluster, udder characteristics and milking parameters on milkability and milking efficiency of Murciano-Granadina breed goats, in order to improve them. The cluster used is well adapted to the goats, except that the teat-floor distance is too short for the teat-cup used and the cluster rests on the platform instead of hanging from the udder, something apparently attributed to a poor udder conformation rather than an excessively-long teat-cup. Udder parameters studied are classified as medium or medium-high by the Murciano-Granadina breed association, and do not seem to represent a problem for good milkability except for the teat sphincter strength, which reduced milk flows (P<0.001) and increased milking times (P<0.001). Maintaining 60% as pulsator ratio, a combination 42 kPa:120 ppm (vacuum level:pulsator rate) milking parameters reduced total milking time by 22 s per goat compared to 40 kPa:90 ppm, commonly used in this flock, but increased teat thickness measured before and after milking. Studies of longer duration are needed to ensure that the new Milking parameters do not affect the udder health status. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. [Abstract] Background: The aim was to evaluate the effects of glutamine on tumor regression and histological damage in patients with rectal patients following chemoradiotherapy previous to surgery. Material and methods: Ten patients with rectal cancer surgically removed after chemoradiotherapy were included, a subgroup of a randomized trial that compared glutamine and placebo in the prevention of acute radiation enteritis. Samples of neoplasm and healthy tissue were evaluated by an expert pathologist searching for signs of tumor regression, muciphages, and signs of radiation-induced damage. Results: There were no differences in the grade of tumor regression with either glutamine or placebo. All patients who received glutamine presented muciphages, compared with 28.6% of the placebo group (p = 0.038). Histological damage was similar in patients receiving glutamine or placebo, and between those with radiation enteritis or without toxicity. Conclusion: Glutamine did not exert a protective effect over chemoradiotherapy in rectal cancer or healthy rectal tissue.[Resumen] Introducción: El objetivo fue evaluar los efectos de la administración de glutamina sobre la regresión tumoral y sobre el tejido sano en pacientes con cáncer rectal que recibieron quimiorradioterapia.

Radical scavenging and cellular antioxidant activity of the cocoa shell phenolic compounds after simulated digestion

The cocoa industry generates a considerable quantity of cocoa shell, a by-product with high levels of methylxanthines and phenolic compounds. Nevertheless, the digestion process can extensively modify these compounds’ bioaccessibility, bioavailability, and bioactivity as a consequence of their transformation. Hence, this work’s objective was to assess the influence of simulated gastrointestinal digestion on the concentration of phenolic compounds found in the cocoa shell flour (CSF) and the cocoa shell extract (CSE), as well as to investigate their radical scavenging capacity and antioxidant activity in both intestinal epithelial (IEC-6) and hepatic (HepG2) cells. The CSF and the CSE exhibited a high amount of methylxanthines (theobromine and caffeine) and phenolic compounds, mainly gallic acid and (+)-catechin, which persisted through the course of the simulated digestion. Gastrointestinal digestion increased the antioxidant capacity of the CSF and the CSE, which also displayed free radical scavenging capacity during the simulated digestion. Neither the CSF nor the CSE exhibited cytotoxicity in intestinal epithelial (IEC-6) or hepatic (HepG2) cells. Moreover, they effectively counteracted oxidative stress triggered by tert-butyl hydroperoxide (t-BHP) while preventing the decline of glutathione, thiol groups, superoxide dismutase, and catalase activities in both cell lines. Our study suggests that the cocoa shell may serve as a functional food ingredient for promoting health, owing to its rich concentration of antioxidant compounds that could support combating the cellular oxidative stress associated with chronic disease developmentThis research was funded by the COCARDIOLAC project from the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation (RTI 2018-097504-B-I00) and the Excellence Line for University Teaching Staff within the Multiannual Agreement between the Community of Madrid and the UAM (2019–2023).
